Florida Minimum Wage Increase: What Florida Employers Need to Know
As of September 30, 2024, Florida’s minimum wage is set to increase in compliance with a Florida Constitutional amendment, which was passed by voters in November 2020. This amendment to the state constitution gradually raises the minimum wage until it reaches $15 per hour in 2026. For employers it’s crucial to stay informed about these changes to ensure compliance with Florida’s minimum wage law, which exceeds the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
New Minimum Wage Rates
Starting September 30, 2024, the minimum wage in Florida will increase to $13.00 per hour. This a one dollar increase from the current minimum wage of $12.00 per hour. For tipped employees, the minimum wage rate will also increase, with the required direct wage moving up to $9.98. This change is part of a broader effort to raise Florida’s minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2026, following this schedule:
- September 30, 2023** – $12.00 per hour
- September 30, 2024** – $13.00 per hour
- September 30, 2025** – $14.00 per hour
- September 30, 2026** – $15.00 per hour
- In 2027 the minimum wage will be adjusted annually for inflation
What This Means for Employers
Florida employers must ensure they are paying employees the required minimum wage on or before September 30, 2024, and should budget for this yearly increase in its workforce costs. Employers must post the updated minimum wage notice in a visible location at their workplace. Electronic copies should be made available to remote employees by email, hard copy or by posting on a shared intranet site available to all employees. As of this post, the updated minimum wage poster is not available on the Floridajobs.org website, but should be available soon.
